What’s with all this Black Friday / Cyber MondayTalk

What is Black Friday / Cyber Monday

Hi, Brian back in the country again. Now back in the thick of it again. I see there is a lot of talk at the moment about Black Friday / Cyber Monday is just around the corner. Will clarify some terms for the non US reader, even some offers below.

What’s been happening

I have been off to Portland Oregon for a few weeks.Twin granddaughters

My youngest and his wife have just produced twin granddaughters. I went out there with my wife to spend some time with them and to help them out, wife is staying for a further month or so. They were only 2 months old when we got there.

The photo is a rare event, when they both had their eyes open.

They are not identical twins, actually look quite different to each other. Quite a demanding time, seems to be a constant need to feed and change them.

Lets have a look at Black Friday / Cyber Monday

First Black Friday

Let’s have a look at some of the definitions:

Earliest reference to retail:

The earliest evidence of the phrase Black Friday applied to the day after Thanksgiving in a shopping context suggests that the term originated in Philadelphia, where it was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving.

Earliest reference to the term:

The earliest reference is actually to a financial crisis in the U.S. gold market on September 24, 1869. This was brought about by the greed of two Wall Street financiers, Jay Gould and Jim Fisk. They had this idea if they were to buy up all the nations gold, this would force up the price and they would be able to recoup a fortune. On that friday the conspiracy failed, the stock market went into free-fall, many were made bankrupt.

A popular (but untrue) story has it:

That retailers had spent the period up to Thanksgiving operating in the ‘red’, that is had made no profit. It was only after the holiday, with the build up in retail sales, that they would start to operate in the ‘black’.

Which leads to the conclusion that ‘Black Friday’ is definitely an American term, being the Friday after Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday in November). Also, being aligned with retail (that is the conventional bricks and mortar) type of establishment.

This ‘one day sale’ has now morphed into a whole week of Black Friday promotions and offers. The one day holiday has also transformed into a week off for some.

Introduced here (probably by American retailers the likes of Amazon), and notable for the reported incidents of fights over TVs in UK stores.

Cyber Monday

Definition of Cyber Monday

Cyber Monday is the Monday after Black Friday, that is the Monday following the Thanksgiving Holiday.

The origin of the term goes back to 2005 when Ellen Davis and Scott Silverman of the US National Retail Federation and Shop.org, made a deliberate move to promote online shopping when the Internet was in its infancy.

The intention was to help the smaller retailers compete with the big names who were harping on about Black Friday, inevitably the big guns joined in as well.

Nowadays, both offer good deals via the internet, it being hard to differentiate the individual promotions. Specifically when the Black Friday promotions seem to go on for the whole of November these days.

Conclusion

As always do your own due diligence before signing up to any offers, recent news headline reported by a consumer group suggested that only 5% of Black Friday deals where actually reliable. There was even cases when the item under review had been cheaper after BF!

Update

There is also a trend for daily deals after BF and CM, along the lines of ’12 days of Christmas’, or such.
