What is your motivation for running your own business?

Why as Entrepreneurs, are we doing this?

Hi Brian here again, my is this year going quickly, what happened to July? Here we are in August already, holiday season. Just been talking to my neighbour, been away for a couple of weeks, and missed the hot spell. He was in Spain and it was hotter here than where he was. Looks like he may have missed the summer.

What have we this time, thought we would revisit our ‘Why’, just to give a reminder. But first some news.

Coming very soon…

I have been working very hard to build a training facility for internet marketing. The plan is to launch around the end of the month. The first training is very near to publication, ideas for making money online.

The materials will consist of:

  • Report
  • Basic training
  • Advanced training

and back to our topic.

What do we mean by Motivation?

Let’s first consider a definition with a business context:

From Business Directory (businessdirectory.com)

Internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to be continually interested and committed to a job, role or subject, or to make an effort to attain a goal.
Motivation results from the interaction of both conscious and unconscious factors such as:

  • intensity of desire or need
  • incentive or reward value of the goal
  • expectations of the individual and of his or her peers

These factors are the reasons one has for behaving a certain way. An example is a student that spends extra time studying for a test because he or she wants a better grade in the class.

Possible factors motivating you

Here we have a few possible things that can have a motivating effect. Perceived benefits of creating your own successful online business, in no particular order:

  • A perceived financial benefit
  • ‘Be your own boss’
  • Freedom to work when you want
  • Freedom to travel
  • Time with family/spouse/grandchildren
  • Retire/give up day job
  • Fund charitable donations/work

Of course your desire is probably the biggest signal factor adding to your success.

So, get a piece of paper and write down what you want this for. That is, determine your ‘WHY’. Write ‘My Why’ at the top of the page.

Of course your desire is probably the biggest signal factor adding to your success. Make copies and post them up in your work area.

This can be one, or several factors, which are your own personal factors – I know someone who wants to fund charitable works abroad, another is renovating a property abroad.

The important thing is to write it down.

Practicalities of starting a business

There are a lot of possible pitfalls when you start out.

There is a lot to learn and it is very easy to get distracted. So may things can prevent you from making a success, see ‘Magpie Effect‘ as one example, procrastination as another (but do not get sidetracked).

Also, other people can get you down, (they just pooh pooh anything outside of their ‘normal’ experience). Your mindset is what matters.

There are no overnight riches in a proper business, it takes hard work and many hours working at the computer. There is no ‘silver bullet to instant riches.

Remember, those practises that offer ‘quick returns’ can all disappear even quicker. A while ago Google changed its algorithms and many business lost most, if not all, of their traffic.

What keeps me motivated?

Personally my why is:

  • To be able to give up the day job
  • Have more time at home with family
  • Spend more time with extended family UK, USA and Ghana
  • Travel, revisit Australia

How I keep motivated is to remind myself of my ‘WHY’. Keep it in sight, when you get distracted, there it is. A constant reminder as to WHY you are actively creating a real online business.

What else can you do?

Accountability buddy

Having an accountability buddy means that you have someone who helps to keep you motivated. There role is to listen to what you intend to do over the next week. At the end of the week you tell them what you actually accomplished. This helps to keep you on track. This person can be spouse/partner, business colleague or a trusted friend.

Coach or Mentor

A coach or mentor is a long term arrangement, which can have what will seem to be quite a substantial upfront investment. Mentor can charge on a yearly basis, these charges should be seen as an investment in you and your business. It can be a very slow learning path working by yourself.

My coach has a webinar that introduces the payment of commissions for $1000 to $3000 in commissions without a website, products or experience. It is certainly worth a listen, you will definitely learn something sign up here.
