Well into the New Year now: Who are you talking to!!

Example audience

How things are panning out this year:

Who are you talking to – Your Audience

Hi Brian Jowers here again, well we are getting well into 2018 now see last post, phew!!!! nearly two months in already. Time is flying by this year, already a year older as birthday just passed and now officially old, can apply for state pension now!! What is your persona?

How is this year going?

The kitchen is now just about finished, just managed to complete the decorating. Ended up having to paint the ceiling twice in the old part of the kitchen and thrice in the new part (had not been decorated for over a decade).

Paper hanging, can be very trying when matching an intricate pattern withou over or under lapping.

But, it is all just about done, no picture as yet, need to do some final touches.

Who is your target audience?

You need to define what your target audience is, who are you aiming at? You MUST resolve this question to know what they may need and for you to know how to communicate with them. Also, what they may need in the way of resources, advice and tools.

Attentive audience hangs on your every move

Persona identifies audience

So, how do we do this?

If you have no better idea then start by looking in the mirror, what you have been interested in is more than likely of interest to them. Once you start to refine your target market then it may well change, or more likely will diverge into different groupings.

We will need to consider the attributes of your audience, such things as:

  • Gender – Is your target audience of a particular gender?
  • Age – What is the target age range of your audience
  • Social / Economic grouping –
  • Income Level – Who is likely to be able to afford your products and services
  • Geographic area – This could be important for a local business, also some countries have restrictions on what activities can be pursued, and taxes also change. Urban / Suburban / Rural
  • Primary Goal – probably financial, but what level aiming for
  • Secondary Goal – freedom to do whatever….
  • Technical ability – there can be a lot of technical stuff to handle

A named persona, can help

Now you have something in mind you can then create a persona, with a name, for example, we might have:

Dave

Male in late 50s

Looking to retire soon, but pension is not sufficient to retire and is looking to supplement his income.

Sees the value of investing in himself on a regular basis

Computer and technically literate

OR we may have

John

Retired

On a fixed income, limited means.

Has very small disposable income

Knows how to switch a computer on, can understand ‘cut and paste’

By giving the persona a name it is then much easier to relate to them, and when offering or promoting to the named persona then you have the guidance for what to stress.

When you first start out there will only be one persona, but as you get more data from the available analytics then the persona(s) can be refined. Over time the available information can be analysed.

Targeted adverts, for example, on FaceBook (or any platform with selectable attributes) will reveal data about your actual audience, allowing you to refine the persona, or even to create new ones. It is not unusual for the audince to actually be quite different to that expected, which could explain the lack of audience participation.

Oh, we have also found that we can segment our audience, a topic for another time.

Check this out – interesting new approaches to audience segmentation – one of the Ogilvy peeps is behind this body of work to have traditional audience targetting supplemented with fundamental principles of behavioral economics to understand not our view of an audience, but the audience’s view of the world…useful supplement to some of what you outline in your blog.

Interesting article John, discussing the comparative psychology of the Trump and Clinton presidential advertising campaigns. Whoever said ‘advertising was simple’, there are so many facets to an advertisement once you start getting into the heads, so to speak, of the advertiser and their expected audience. As a recipient, or target!, of advertising it can be quite interesting trying to analyse the purpose of such campaigns.
